The History of Graffiti and Hip Hop, Graffiti Art History Research by All Weather Artist Rik Cheetham
ABOUT THE WORK
The greatest and most diverse Art galleries are now the city streets. But without a guide book, the work on display is a mystery to most who care to take the time to look at what's on display. What are we looking at? Where did it come from? What does it mean?
Based on a studies written over the course of 15 years by All Weather Artist Alto, What's in a Name explains the expansion of Graffiti as art Starting in prehistory, exploring the natural process of human visualisation of themselves on public surfaces, the point of it's criminalisation and the emergence of Hip Hop within all warps of creative disciplines today. The localised phenomenon which grew to a billion dollar industry with millions of followers spanning the globe. However, the roots and aims of the artistic practice are often misunderstood and rarely taught accurately as a zeitgeist of modern communities - much less as a culture of principles, complex systems of governance. A holistic therapy , combating the detrimental effects or cultural disaffection by creating one's own identity and practicing a unique style.
The documentary of Hip Hop shows us what this art is, the more important question is why people needed to take control of their own cultural identity and start to express themselves in this way?
